Movies HowTo
Most of the movies you will be watching this semester can be either viewed directly online or downloaded to your computer. To download them, you will need something called a bitTorrent client or program.Important: All of the assigned films are freely available to the public. You are not being asked to do anything illegal. However, the use of bitTorrent to download OTHER copyright-protected materials is not something encouraged or approved in this course.
Also, if you live on campus, please be advised that bitTorrent traffic is intentionally slowed down. You will be able to use bitTorrent, but it will be so slow that you might be better off just watching the low-resolution video online. Sorry, but there's nothing I can do about it.
bitTorrent
bitTorrent is a technology that allows peers to download files from each other. Yes, it is mostly used to download copyright-protected materials like movies or music illegally, but it can also be used to share important cultural documents in a completely legal way (like we are doing in this class!).
Here are some of the recommended clients (they are all free).
- Vuze
(Windows and Mac)
- uTorrent
(Windows and Mac)
- Transmission
(Mac only)
If you choose to download the films instead of watching a low-quality version online, please install and learn how to use your bitTorrent software. I'm assuming it is not necessary to show college students how to use bitTorrent, but if you have questions or problems please post them in the Help Desk forum.
More instructions about how to download each film are provided in the Schedule.
